About Me

Who Am I?

Im Tartarus Kelvin (stage name ofcourse) a Quantitative Developer (think if Quant Researcher and Software Developer had an awful child) basically I work on the systems that power financial markets. This site is penance for that. With the rest of my life I spend it mostly playing Table Top RPGs, watching bad movies, trying to take good photos and looking at cute dogs. Currently based out of London but originally from Northern Ireland.

Manifesto

For all intents and purposes this is my goals/ criteria for when Im working on this site.

  1. Artisinal Bugs: I already spend a fair amount of time in work surrounded by AI, this site is purely my own mess. I want to struggle to centre a div not have claude do it for me.
  2. Only Fun Stuff: I add things and work on this site because I want to - if its not fun to do I wont do it.
  3. My Aesthetic and Opinions: Pretty obvious this site is to my standards of looks, functionality and is done the way it is because thats the way I want it.
  4. KISS: I.e. Keep it simple stupid. This site should always be as simple as it needs to be never more.

Why The Name?

My name is two words put together "Tartarus" and "Kelvin" lets work them backwards.

Kelvin

Ive always kinda liked Lord kelvin, I'm not entirely sure why but one thing is for sure is that I spent a surprising amount of time around his name. For one my walk to uni would always pass his monument in the botanical gardens. It actually took me quite a long time to realise that the reason that that monument is there is because he was born in Belfast. I think I should be forgiven though due to the fact he lived mostly in Glasgow. He was the first scientist in the House of Lords, Hes the namesake for the unit of temperature / absolute zero, he even had a hand in the transatlantic telegraph.

To be frank though my main amusement from Kelvin is this quote "In science there is only physics; all the rest is stamp collecting". I have used this quote for years mostly as a way to wind people up.

So why Kelvin? I just like the name.

Tartarus

Now with the context of Kelvin, Tartarus makes more sense. Ok maybe not fully but if there is one thing that I love its word association. If Kelvin is absolute zero what is it to zero? Well its pretty far down when compared to zero. What else is pretty far down? Hell.

Hell Kelvin does have a ring to it but its a bit to metal band for me. Lets apply some more nerd word play, Hell is a place of torture for the damned, what other places are there like that? First one that comes to my mind is Tartarus.

So Tartarus Kelvin it is.
